Newham London Borough Council is one of the 32 councils that composes Greater London.  It was created in 1963 when the councils were changed around and was made up from three former councils; East Ham Borough Council, West Ham Borough Council and Woolwich Metropolitan Borough Council.

For residents, the council is the place to go to find out a variety of information, get services they need and pay for things like council tax.  The council is responsible for a range of housing around the area as well as collecting waste and recycling, creating parking permits and providing schools and leisure facilities.

Contacting the council

For 24 access to council services, their website https://www.newham.gov.uk/  is the best option.  Here you can apply for services, pay for things and also report problems, both for council housing residents and other residents.  There is also an app you can download that lets you report environmental issues from your smartphone or tablet.

The main contact centre number is 020 8430 2000 or if you use a textphone, add 18001 in front.  It is open from 9 am until 5 pm weekdays and can get you through to the right department to help you.  you can also visit the main council offices on 328 Barking Road, East Ham which is open from 9 am until 5 pm weekdays.

For tenants of council properties, if you need emergency repairs to your home, then you can call freephone 0800 952 5555.  And if you think there is a gas leak, you can ring the main gas emergency line on 0800 111 999. If you need to pay council tax you can either use the website or call 020 8430 2000.
