Edinburgh City Council is the council responsible for the Scottish capital and handles all direct council matters for its residents. It is based in City Chambers on High Street and the main switchboard number is 0131 200 2000.
While much of government for the whole of Scotland takes place from Edinburgh, the City Council handles matters for the residents of the city itself. It has two main headquarters and also operates a number of helplines for residents to use. There is an extensive website and some services can be paid for across the internet as well.
You can pay your council tax in a number of ways including on the website and view your online account to see the status of payments and your overall bill. The website contains information about council tax bands and charges and you can query if you think you have been placed in the wrong band.
Bins and recycling queries can be handled over the phone or via the website. There is information available about the bin collection days and you can even request a new recycling box or bin if yours has been damaged or isn’t present in a new house.

There are two main sites for Edinburgh City Council. The administrative headquarter is at Waverley Court, 4 East Market Street while the council headquarters is in City Chambers, High Street. There are also local offices that are divided into north-east, north-west, south-east and south-west.
There are various departments for the different services available which can be accessed via the switchboard. There are also some social care numbers to use for adults – 0131 200 2324 and for children – 0131 200 2327.
Council offices are open 8:30am to 5pm weekdays apart from Friday where they close at 3:40pm. Some services do shut earlier at 4:30pm. Outside these times where are some emergency numbers:
